With a maximum altitude of 4000 meters this is an easy and one of the most popular treks of the Garhwal region and can be done all the year round, however, you get the best experiences and views during spring and winters. DeoriaTal- Chopta trek, also known as Chopta- Chandrashila trek or Chopta trek, starts from Sari village and goes through rhododendron forests and Deoria Taal.
During spring the rhododendrons are in full bloom and the walk through these forests is an experience you would cherish for years. The view at DeoriaTaal is again breathtaking with Chaukhamba and other Kedar peaks on the north of the lake and their reflection falling in the crystal clear water of Deoria Tal.
Route to the Chandrashila peak passes through the world’s highest Shiva temple, Tungnath which is one of the PanchKedar and stands at an elevation of 3, 680 meters above sea level. From Chandrashila peak you get 360 degree view of the Kumaon and Garhwal mountains. Nanada Devi, Trishul, Chaukhamba, Bandarpoonch and Kedar peaks are all visible from the top.
Being an easy trek it is a perfect beginners trek, an ideal family trek. It does not require you to push yourself to extremes hence highly recommended for school trips and corporate trips.
If possible try to reach Rishikesh a day before the trip starts. That gives the trek leader time to brief you about the trek. That also gives you enough time to relax and to prepare for the trek.Enjoy the overnight stay in our camps and wake up to the sounds of barking dear and chirping of birds next morning.
Meet the team at 6:00 am and start the journey to Sari village. We halt on the way for breakfast and lunch. Sari is the starting point of Deoria Tal trek. This long but beautiful drive goes along the rivers Ganga, Alaknanda and Mandakini. We pass through the important towns of historical and mythological significance such as Devprayag, the confluence of Bhagirathi and Alaknanda which together flow as the holy Ganga and further Rudraprayag, the confluence of Alaknanda and Mandakini. We reach Sari around 4:pm and start our trek to Deoria Taal on a well defined rocky trail through rhododendron and oak forests. As per the new NGT rules camping is not allowed near the lake hence we pitch our tents a little away from the lake. The view at Deoria Taal is mesmerizing. Have some snacks and hot tea, explore the area around, sit down for a chit chat and then settle in your tents after dinner for overnight stay here.
Wake up to the stunning sunrise view of Chaukhamba peak as the clouds would have lifted in the morning. This is also the time when you see clear reflection of the peaks in the lake. Bask in the beauty of this view. Have a hearty breakfast and set on your trek to Chopta through the beautiful alpine meadows and forests of oak, maple and rhododendrons in red and pink colours. It’s an easy trek with gradual ascent. The flora and fauna is part of the Kedarnath Sanctuary and you may have chances to spot small wild animals on your way. You will come across the small rivulet coming from Chandrashila, then pass through the local villages and meet the shepherds as you move towards the vicinity of Chopta where we camp on day 2. Relax and enjoy your evening followed by a hot meal and overnight stay in the camp.
Wake up early morning and commence the hike while it is still dark to soak in the beautiful sunrise from Tungnathand the panoramic view of high Himalayan peaks from the summit. There will be few steep climbs and sharp bends on the hike today. The trek is on a well- defined concrete trail all the way upto Tungnath and goes through dwarf rhodendron bushes. You cannot help but admire the architecture of this temple built more than 1000 years old, considering the hard work and efforts put in by the artisans in those times. Chandrashila top is about 1 kilometer from the temple and the route to top bends from behind the temple complex. It takes a gradual climb of about an hour to reach to Chandrashila peak. You get a majestic 360 degree view of Kumaon and Garhwal mountains from the top. Nanda Devi, the second highest peak in India along with other peaks such as Chaukhamba, Bandarpoonch, Trishul and Kedar peaks are prominently visible from here.Return back to Chopta, relax for a while after your meal and spend your evening watching the birds around, the colours of sky and different shapes that clouds form and observe the luka- chhupi of clouds and the mountains. Overnight stay in the camp.
We pack up our camp after breakfast and board our vehicles to return back to Rishikesh. We halt on the way for tea/ coffee snacks and lunch and reach Rishikesh by evening where our tour ends with memories to cherish and stories to take back to our family and friends.
Meeting point – We meet at the office of Rewild India in Tapovan, Rishikesh
